Add some new death mechanics based on Don't Starve!
Upon any death, you'll become a ghost. As a ghost, you'll be in spectator mode and can't do too much. You'll need some way to resurrect if you want to keep playing.
Structures
Florid Postern
Around spawn, you'll find the Florid Postern, a portal-like structure. To resurrect at the Florid Postern, you'll need to simply pass through it as a ghost, similar to Don't Starve Together's Endless playstyle. Resurrecting at the Florid Postern will require two hearts of max health, however. The reinforced deepslate block at the center of the Florid Postern is what actually allows the resurrection mechanism to work; if it's destroyed, the Florid Postern will no longer be able to resurrect players. The ability to destroy the florid postern is more for enabling a challenge; like playing the Survival playstyle in Don't Starve, so you don't have a way to infinitely respawn.
Touch Stone
You'll be able to find touch stones around the world, slabs surrounded by carved pumpkins. By right clicking the touch stone, you'll attune to the touch stone. You can only attune to one touch stone at a time. To resurrect at a touch stone, you'll need to look downwards and left click as a ghost to resurrect there. Alternatively, you can just left click a touch stone as a ghost to resurrect at it. Either way of resurrecting at a touch stone will destroy the touch stone. However, resurrecting at a touch stone will not cost you any max health.
/place commands
If you need to place down one of these structures with a command, these should help:
/place template dsdm:florid_postern
/place template dsdm:touch_stone
Alternatively, you can place them using a structure block.
Craftable Items
Meat Effigy
You can craft a meat effigy to resurrect at it upon death. You'll need to attune to it to be able to resurrect there, like the touch stone. You can only attune to one touch stone or meat effigy at a time. Unlike with the touch stone, you CANNOT resurrect at a meat effigy if you have not attuned to it. Resurrecting here will cost 2 hearts of max health. Unlike in the original game, switching attunement between meat effigies will not cost you any health.
To craft a meat effigy, you'll need 5 rabbit hide, 2 rotten flesh, an armor stand, and any log. You'll also need 2.5 hearts to craft the meat effigy; if you don't have enough health, you won't be able to craft it. Crafting it will take those hearts from you.
Telltale Heart
In multiplayer, you can revive a friend by crafting a telltale heart. Ghost Players emit a particle effect to other players, so you'll be able to see them. By being close and aiming where their head would be, you can right click with a telltale heart in hand to revive them. The resurrected player will lose two hearts of max health.
To craft a telltale heart, you need 3 grass and 1 fermented spider eye. Like with the meat effigy, you'll need 2.5 hearts or you won't be able to craft it. This recipe is also shapeless, so this particular arrangement doesn't matter.
Booster Shot
When resurrecting with the Florid Postern, Meat Effigy, or Telltale Heart, your max health will go down by two hearts. To get it back, you'll need to make a booster shot. By using this item, you'll regain two hearts of max health. You cannot use this item if you already have full max health.
Crafting will need 4 rotten flesh, 2 spider eyes, and 1 flint. No hearts are required to craft this.
Totem of Undying mechanics
The Totem of Undying was reworked to function similarly to the Life Giving Amulet in Don't Starve Together.
If you hold it and take lethal damage, the Totem of Undying will prevent death as normal. However, if you are already dead and you fly onto a totem of undying on the ground, and get the camera really close to it, you'll revive as if you just used the totem. There's no max health penalty for using a totem to revive either.
